Scrum
Half
Ideally
the scrum half needs to be able to pass the ball quickly and accurately
either of his left or right hand. Speed and accuracy of pass is
always more preferable than length of pass. Look to take take
penalties and free kicks before the defence is ready. Make sure
he has 2 or 3 forwards in support
GENERAL The scrum half is the
key player in the team; he is at the centre of all that happens.
He is
- Link
between forwards and backs
- The
co-ordinator who dictates when the ball is produced, usually
by the forwards.
- The
scrum half is often the link who decides where the ball goes
and "what happens next".
- He
will need to understand the lineout calls, backrow moves and
back line play.
- He
must be an instantaneous passer of the ball
- He
must also be able to tackle, kick and run with the ball
- A
motivator and a leader
- A
decision-maker, a reader of the game, a tactician.
PASSING.
The scrum half must be able to pass the ball quickly, without
delay, off either left or right hand accurately to the fly half.
Speed is always preferable to length.
KICKING. Ideally the scrum half
needs to be able to kick with either foot and should be able to
effect high kicks (box kicks) over the line-out and scrums. He
may on occasions put a high midfield kick in the direction of
the opposition's full back. To execute these "box" kicks
successfully he should use the protection of the lineout or scrum
and take only one step back as he performs the kick.
RUNNING. A scrum half who can
make a break will present a threat to the opposition but should
do so selectively and within the game plan of the team.
DEFENCE. In scrum defence the
scrum half will work with his back row; from a lineout, ruck and
maul the scrum half is likely to be a defensive organiser, usually
standing behind the ruck or maul and be aware of his individual
responsibilities with the team plan.
CONTINUITY/OPEN
PLAY. The scrum half must be aware of "what happens next"
and must be able to read the game. communicate
plays and dictate decision making
