Following
the saturday fixture against the same opposition it
would have been easy to under estimate the task. Cup games
always throw up upsets and S&L where in front with
a minute on the clock, with a penalty immediately from the
kick off. Oundle stuttered for the first five minutes but
got into the game after some excellent work in the front
five. The forwards pressured in the scrum and loose and
earned a penalty as the opposition held on in the tackle.
Lee Green kicked for the corner and it was number 8, Chris
Brown who found himself at the back of the catch and drive
from the resulting lineout to cross over and score his second
try in two games. Lee Green added the extra points. Oundle
backs started find some continuity and with wing forward
Charlie Davies adding pace, the threats became apparent
out wide but Oundle struggled with the final execution to
exploit it. Robbie Holden extended the lead on 18 minutes,
making a clean break from an attacking lineout as the defence
drifted. The next kick for Lee Green was a very special
one as the conversion meant he had reached a 1000 points
in senior rugby, he slotted the effort calmly. Charlie Davies
was again instrumental in the next try following a 50 metre
break, the maul at the tackle saw Oundle drove over and
scrum half Danny Rutter touched the ball down as he sniped
blind. Lee Green this time was unsuccessful with the conversion.
S&L had the last say of the half with their second penalty
from the restart as Oundle failed to control the contact
area.
The
second half Oundle made two changes Ollie Jolly swapping
for Chris Brown at the back of the scrum and Jason Jibb
replacing Sam Rutledge. The next score was a try by David
Murdoch, who initially made a good break to get territory
and then crossing to complete a good set of phase play.
Green converted. S&L kept coming back into the game
and spent time pressuring the visitors, Oundle's defence
held firm. Bill Gough was replaced by Sean Murray on 50
minutes. S&L eventually were rewarded with their 3rd
penalty to peg bag the score but the game was made safe
with a well worked try which saw Sam Wainwright cross in
the corner as Oundle backs cut loose. Green was unsuccessful
with the conversion. S&L were next on the score sheet
as they again used forwards to make the hard yards and Oundle
gave away territory through indiscipline. Unconverted the
score now 31 - 14, still did not show the difference between
the two sides but two late tries, a second for Robbie Holden
and one for hard working winger David Rowe, both converted
by Lee Green to seal a good win. Simon New made an appearance
for 20 minutes returning from an ankle injury sustained
last November.
